Install tools and applications fast — from GitHub releases and direct URLs, without touching your environment.
paq install ripgrep
01 what paq is
One command drops a tool or application straight onto your machine — no build step, no package database to prime, no daemon to wait on.
paq installs into plain directories you own and keeps its state to itself. No runtime, no shell hijacking — it never takes over your environment.
paq won't switch active versions behind your back. It doesn't manage them for you — but running several side by side is trivial, each in its own place.
02 capabilities
Install from GitHub release assets or any direct download URL, verified with SHA-256 checksums.
Declare the tools you want in a plain config file. One command reproduces your whole toolbox.
Curated recipes are compiled into the binary, so paq works fully offline — with optional live updates.
Pin exact versions or track latest; paq upgrade rolls everything forward cleanly.
Keep several versions of the same tool at once — each install goes to its own dest, so nothing collides and nothing else is touched.
paq self-update keeps the tool current; paq doctor checks your PATH and setup.
03 quickstart
Grab a tool from the embedded registry, or drive everything from a TOML manifest — no runtime, no daemon, one static binary.
paq runs alongside your system’s package manager: reach for it when a tool isn’t in the official repos yet, when you want a bleeding-edge release, or to keep several versions of the same tool side by side — without touching your shell, profile, or system directories.
# Install a tool from the registry
paq install ripgrep
# List tool definitions available in the registry
paq registry list
# Show details of a single definition
paq registry show ripgrep
Then head to the documentation for the manifest format, custom recipes, and the full command reference.
